Faith-based Greensboro nonprofit helps revitalize communities

Most nonprofit organizations work to help people. They’re set up so that individuals can come to them for help when they’re homeless or when they’re experiencing domestic violence. They’re set up so that children can come in when they need help with schoolwork or need a safe place to socialize.

The Life of Victory in Christ Ministries Community Development Corporation is different. It focuses on revitalizing and strengthening entire neighborhoods.

“Our organizations believe in canvassing, knocking on doors, having these public venues in the streets where people can hear what we say, see the reality of what’s happening, and at the same time build relationships with each other,” said Kenneth Holly, President of The Life of Victory in Christ Ministries.

It’s a faith-based Community Development Corporation that brings organizations, institutions, agencies, and churches together.

He also sits on the Community Grantmaking Council of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The goal is to pool resources and services to improve neighborhoods and the lives of people who live there.

“We’re doing this in Guilford County,” Holly said. “We’re bringing all the resources, services, and support to the doorstep of the people who need it the most.”

And it truly is on doorsteps. One engagement method is called Health in the Streets, where the agency goes into neighborhoods to provide free health screenings as well as help with medical debt relief.

Another initiative is called Church in the Streets, where multiple agencies set up to promote community healing collectively. Holly says it’s a way people can gather and build relationships and trust with each other.

“One of the things we found out is that a lot of times when you talk about communities, everybody has different cultures and backgrounds that they’re used to adjusting to, and what In the Streets type of work does it allows us to meet people where they’re at, to talk about the real issues and bring real solutions to those problems,” said Holly.

Dennis White is the Community Engagement and Implementation Specialist for the Life of Victory in Christ Ministries. He says when groups come together with people in the community and really listen, it can lead to meaningful dialogue and powerful change.

“When people are engaged, hope transfers,” White said. “There’s a lot of things going on in communities that you people need to learn about and explore before they attempt to initiate a program or programming, but when dialog is created, when you have something to offer or share, when people are listened to, heard, and seen, hope emerges from those interactions, and the energy to continue to push forward and to endure some of the things that we’re trying to change becomes a power source that the community can draw from.”

The Life of Victory in Christ Ministries Community Development Corporation is based in Winston-Salem but serves several counties. Right now, it’s focusing on Greensboro. It’s working with hospitals and agencies to forgive medical debt for people living below the federal poverty line and to make sure people know about opportunities available in their community.
