Women’s History Month: Honoring Founder Cynthia Doyle

In 1981, while flying home from a Junior League conference, Cynthia Doyle heard women across the country talk about something Greensboro was missing: a community foundation. The idea stuck with her. Within days, she was meeting with civic leaders and asking a simple but momentous question: Should Greensboro have one? The answer was yes. Doyle then brought together the people, partnerships, and determination needed to make it happen. By 1983, the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro was up and running, starting out in a borrowed office with a strong belief in the city’s potential.

Building the Foundation was not an easy sell. Early grants were modest, and fundraising was slow. Yet Doyle believed deeply that philanthropy should not belong only to the wealthy. “You didn’t have to be rich to be a part of the foundation,” she said. That conviction shaped the organization’s inclusive model, one that allowed families of all means to create lasting charitable impact without the burden of administering their own funds. She envisioned the Foundation as an enabler, a structured pathway through which generosity could flow steadily and strategically into the community.

Over time, what started as a simple conversation grew into an institution at the heart of Greensboro’s civic life. The Foundation expanded not just in assets but also in trust, diversity, and influence. Doyle encouraged it to stay bold and look ahead, urging leaders to focus on real community needs instead of trying to please everyone. “Don’t try to please everybody,” she said. “Find the real problems and go after them.”

Today, the Community Foundation is one of Greensboro’s leading philanthropic organizations, managing resources that support education, housing, health, culture, and opportunity. Its growth comes from Doyle’s early belief that giving builds community and that when generosity is guided by purpose, it can shape a city’s future for generations.
