The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro is committed to supporting students in Greensboro and Guilford County through scholarships and workforce initiatives. The resources we offer includes a range of scholarship opportunities aimed at helping students pursue higher education and achieve their academic goals. These scholarships cover various fields of study and are designed to support students from diverse backgrounds.

We partner with local organizations and businesses to create workforce initiatives that provide students with valuable skills, training, and internship opportunities, preparing them for successful careers in the local workforce. These initiatives contribute to the educational and economic development of the community, ensuring a brighter future for our students and our region.

Scholarships

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro offers scholarships that recognize academic or athletic achievement, respond to financial need, support field-of-study pursuits, and help us build the next generation of community leaders. Scholarships range from one-time $1,000 awards up to renewable awards of $10,000 every year for four years.

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro offers scholarships that recognize academic or athletic achievement, respond to financial need, support field-of-study pursuits, and help us build the next generation of community leaders. Scholarships range from one-time $1,000 awards up to renewable awards of $10,000 every year for four years.

The following scholarship opportunities are available through our online application portal. 

Herman and Earline Herbin Scholarship​

This scholarship is intended for Guilford County high school seniors. Two $1,750 scholarships will be awarded, renewable for up to four years. The scholarship is primarily need-based, but academic standing will be a secondary determining factor.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Herman and Earline Herbin Scholarship.”

Open to seniors graduating from Guilford County high schools who have demonstrated special interest and aptitude in foreign affairs, service to the country, living and working abroad, and the international relations field. One $7,500 award is given.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Jason Christopher James Memorial Scholarship.

Open to a Greensboro graduating senior who displays a creative, innovative, and courageous spirit in writing, and exhibits those skills through school and community activities to effect change. One $3,000 award will be given.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship.”

For seniors graduating from Guilford County Schools who agree to serve for at least three years as a full-time teacher in NC public schools. Special consideration will be given to students attending North Carolina colleges and universities and to those who agree to teach in Guilford County. One $10,000 award is renewable for up to four years.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “John R. Kernodle Memorial Scholarship.”

Women to Women has established the Kay Hagan Scholarship in her honor, which is awarded to a graduating female high school senior who shares Kay’s passion for community, civic leadership, and assisting others to make a difference in the world. This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for up to four years subject to maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Kay Hagan Memorial Scholarship.”

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1983 to honor Thomas G. and Bettie O’Briant. The scholarship is intended for a graduating Guilford High School senior with a preference for a student with financial need. One $2,500 award is renewable for up to four years.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship.”

The William Bryant Evans and Lucy Teague Evans Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994. Priority is given to those who live in the McLeansville area with a preference given to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or the humanities. The applicant must also demonstrate financial need and academic achievement. One $1,000 award is renewable for up to four years.

Guilford Apprenticeship Partners

Promising Career. College Degree. Zero Debt.

As you approach your junior and senior year of high school, friends, family, and teachers are frequently asking you about your plans after graduation.

  • Will you go to college?
  • Should you consider the military?
  • Maybe you’re a talented athlete wondering if you could go pro.

Whatever path you pick, it needs to be a good fit for your interests, goals, and individual style. More and more students are discovering apprenticeships. In fact, thousands of high school students across the country are enrolling in apprenticeship programs to create a bright future, and you can too.  More than 30 companies right here in Guilford County are offering apprenticeships to high school juniors and seniors through Guilford Apprenticeship Partners.

Eastern Triad Workforce Initiative

Preparing our region's workforce for the future of industry

Eastern Triad Workforce Initiative (ETWI) is a public-private partnership that provides apprenticeship and on-the-job training to meet employers’ needs, prepare young people for in-demand careers, and enable people already in the workforce to secure better paying jobs.

The stated objectives of the Eastern Triad Workforce Initiative are to:

  • shift mind-sets and change the paradigm of career pathways,
  • scale apprenticeships and on-the-job training programs,
  • expand youth, adult, and veteran workforce development programs, and
  • create a pipeline of highly-skilled employees for workforce-challenged industries, predominantly comprised of small businesses.

Today, ETWI brings together stakeholders, including employers, chambers of commerce, K-12 and community college institutions, apprenticeship consortia, and workforce development agencies, from Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, and Rockingham Counties to increase adult and youth workforce development programs to meet the growing needs of industry in our region.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro

As part of our celebration, the CFGG Equity Team came together to prepare a special lunch inspired by Latin cuisines from different parts of the Americas. Team members Megan Quinones and Martin Acevedo took the lead, cooking up a delicious assortment of authentic dishes that represented their cultural roots. From savory flavors to sweet delights, this meal provided a taste of the rich diversity within the Hispanic and Latinx communities, offering a flavorful journey through the different regions of Latin America.
