Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro

PUBLIC ART ENDOWMENT

ENSURING A VIBRANT FUTURE FOR ALL OF GREENSBORO

Established by a gift from the law firm of Schell Bray Aycock Abel and Livingston in honor of the firm’s 20th anniversary, the Public Art Endowment at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro is a permanent fund for the creation of new community artwork and is the only fund of its kind in the area.

Growing Public Art in Greensboro

With guidance from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and other arts organizations, including Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greenhill Center for NC Art, and ArtsGreensboro, the Public Art Endowment Fund helps preserve and expand Greensboro’s sense of community by facilitating the long-term and permanent placements of significant public artworks throughout the city.

The Public Art Endowment is governed by its Trustees, a passionate group of enthusiasts for the arts and for Greensboro. Trustees are involved in all aspects of the endowment, including selection of artworks and development of related programming, as well as advocacy within the greater community for the Public Art Endowment and its mission. Trustees are supported in their work by the Art Selection Committee, made up of arts professionals from around the country who make recommendations of multiple artists or specific works for consideration.

Our goal is to improve the quality of life in Greensboro by creating a more colorful, vibrant, and creative community. Though it began with mostly temporary installations, the Endowment unveiled its first permanent, commissioned work of art, an aerial sculpture entitled “Where We Met” by Janet Echelman, in LeBauer Park in August 2016. The first permanent sculpture, Guardian, by Billy Lee, was a gift from Richard and Jane Levy in 2008.

The Endowment aims to continue focusing its efforts on funding permanent artworks as well as being open to interactive temporary works that can bring a community together and raise awareness of the importance of public art.

Public Art creates art museums without walls that are free and open to all. The PAE strives to activate cultural connectivity, enhance economic vitality, and create a compelling visual experience for both the residents of Greensboro and the many visitors to our city.

The PAE is collaborative and focused; it benefits from strong partnerships with other local organizations, including the Greensboro Science Center, Cone Health, and the City of Greensboro. Since 2008, the PAE has provided the Greensboro community with nine temporary artworks loaned to us by artists, two interactive, temporary art projects and nine permanent works of art. Our latest collaboration is with the City of Greensboro at the Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex.

How to become a trustee?

Trustees choose to make a commitment at one of three stewardship levels: $25,000+ to become an Endowment Trustee, $10,000 or $5,000 to become a Trustee. Any of these commitments may be paid over five years and confer a lifetime position as a Trustee. The more you give, the bigger your vote, but the maximum number of votes you can accumulate is 5. At the $25,000+ level, Endowment Trustees also are eligible to help determine the project budget as well as cull an initial pool of artist prospects. Please contact us for more information.

Public Art Endowment Collection

2024/2026

Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex

The collaboration between the City and the Public Art Endowment (PAE) meets the common goal of placing public art that benefits Greensboro’s cultural and economic landscape. This project spreads the considerable impact of public art to underserved areas and populations of Greensboro and will highlight the historical significance of this East Greensboro neighborhood.

Brooklyn Artist Malene Barnett was selected to complete a 12’ X 24’ interior tile mural. The total project budget will be $146,000. Malene will collaborate with EVOKE: Studio/Architecture to plan and facilitate a community engagement process to solicit community input on public art prior to submission of a conceptual design that will be implemented for a work of a public art to be displayed on the inside of the WCNCC facility. Completed scheduled for early 2027.

2023

Heart and Vascular Center at Moses H. Cone Hospital

The PAE donated $25,000 to create a Parking Deck Screen at the New Heart & Vascular Center at Moses H. Cone Hospital.  The screen will be visible from Wendover Avenue and was created by artist Monique Luck. The Screen was installed in Fall 2024.

2022/2024

Moses Cone Hospital Project

The Public Art Endowment (PAE) and Cone Health commissioned an iconic piece of art for the entrance area to the Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center and the Women’s and Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital.

In September 2022, artist Cliff Garten was selected to create a site-specific sculpture at this location. Garten is the founder of the Cliff Garten Studio in Venice, California with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of
Landscape Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

In November 2023, Cliff Garten unveiled his design for Corous. The sculpture and Plaza named for the Worth Family were completed and installed in Fall of 2024.

2019/2022

RELATIVITY David Hess 2022 Stainless Steel

A collaboration between the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s Public Art Endowment (PAE) and the Greensboro Science Center was created for the facilitation of the fabrication and installation of a work of public art to be displayed on the outside of the GSC facility located on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, NC. This site will be accessible and free to all who come into the park area. This art project will focus on transforming the entry plaza of the GSC’s newly renovated entrance as a special place to gather and interact with science and art at the same time! Along with $75,000 and $30,000 in in-kind services from the PAE, the project now has a budget of $275,000 due to $170,000 in gracious gifts from our patrons. The PAE selected Maryland artist David Hess in January 2020 to design and create the new sculpture installed in February 2022.

2018

Fall by Andy Dunnill

Fall by the late Andy Dunnill, an art professor at UNCG, was a gift from Jane and Richard Levy to the PAE who in turn gave it to the City of Greensboro in 2018.  The piece was created in 1997 and has been shown in Chicago at the Navy Pier Exhibition and also at Socrates Park in NYC.  It is a quintessential work of the artist, showing bold, imposing forms with figurative overtones.

2017

Da Dans by Carl Powel

A new stained glass installation on the exterior of the Van Dyke Performance Space located at the Greensboro Cultural Center at 200 N. Davie in Greensboro, the piece is entitled “De Dans” and was a joint project of the Public Art Endowment, an initiative of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, and the City of Greensboro. Installed in October 2017, the windows are illuminated at dusk every night.

The work was created by Asheville artist Carl Powell. The name is a nod to the Dutch heritage of the building’s namesake Jan Van Dyke, and the building’s design as a dance venue. Powell was inspired by both the facility’s purpose and its surroundings.

“I tried to convey the joy of dance and my interpretation of movement and color that will hopefully relate to the space and to the wonderful park that is outside,” he said.

2016

Where We Met by Janet Echelman

The 2016 installation and lighting of the Echelman sculpture, commissioned to honor the area’s rich textile history, was the highlight of the LeBauer Park opening ceremony week. The first permanent, commissioned artwork by The Public Art Endowment at The Community Foundation, Where We Met, was supported by the LeBauer bequest and a $1 million grant from The Edward M. Armfield, Sr. Foundation, established by and named for the late textile industrialist.

The largest public art installation in the southeast, Where We Met is an undulating, colorful net hung high above the park’s Great Lawn from four mammoth pylons positioned around the perimeter. The connecting shape from which the net is draped mirrors an 1896 map of N.C. railroad tracks connecting many of the state’s major textile hubs at the time.

2016

Peacehaven Sensory Space by Carrie Gault and Cynthia Frank

As children explore the space, they can run their fingers over a variety of textures, see bright colors and distinct designs, and listen to their voices echo through holes in the wall. Completed in 2016, this sculpture was completed through special gifts and leadership of Peacehaven Community Farm.  Artists worked closely with the community to create a space that is accessible to children of all abilities.

For more information, please read this news article about the space.
