2011 Long-Term Installation winner!
Trustees of the Public Art Endowment voted to bring to Greensboro Standing Vase with Five Flowers by renowned sculptor James Surls!
Standing Vase with Five Flowers was created in 2005. The bronze sculpture stands 15 feet tall! It was installed along the median of Green Valley Road, near the entrance to the Proximity Hotel.
As the Public Art Endowment raises its $2 million fundraising goal, trustees are seeking loans from artists of pieces for long-term installation – at least one year – in Greensboro. Doing so helps provide public awareness of the Public Art Endowment and hints at the type of permanent pieces that will be possible once fundraising is complete and purchases can be made.
A native of East Texas, Surls now lives in Roaring Fork Valley, Colo. He graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1966 and from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1968.
Surls says that his proudest accomplishment is his family. The next proudest is “all the solo and group exhibitions, as well as being in the collection of many an amazing museum throughout the world.” These include the Dallas Museum of Art and the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston.
