GREENSBORO, N.C. – Morgan Hakala, a 2013 graduate of Northern Guilford High School, has received the John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship. Hakala, the daughter of Chris and Linda Hakala, will attend the University of North Carolina Asheville, where she will pursue a double major in English and Drama. At Northern Guilford, Morgan was Poet Laureate, published in Teen Ink several times and received both the Excellence in English & Drama awards this year.
The $3,000 scholarship is given to a Guilford County High School senior who displays a creative, innovative and courageous spirit in writing and exhibits those skills through school and community activities to effect change.
The John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship was established in memory of John Myatt, a 1988 Grimsley graduate, who died in a June 1990 swimming accident. The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro administers the scholarship, and tax-exempt donations may be made to the John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship at The Community Foundation, 330 S.
