CFGG Response to Recent Political Ad

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro (CFGG) is proud of the leadership role it has played in strengthening our community since 1983. We are deeply concerned about the inaccurate and misleading claims being made in a political ad currently airing on local television stations.

This commercial misrepresents important facts related to our operations.

In 2013, CFGG raised more than $29 million in private contributions for a special project widely benefiting the community: construction of the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. These restricted gifts resulted in CFGG reporting a dramatic increase in revenue for that year. There was no $30 million surplus in our operating budget.

In 2014, in accordance with the restricted wishes of Carolyn LeBauer’ s estate, CFGG began leading another special effort to broadly benefit the community: construction of LeBauer Park, one of the leading urban parks in the country. The advance of funds for this project resulted in CFGG reporting a dramatic increase in expenses for that year. There was no $3 million loss in our operating budget.

CFGG is proud of our role in stewarding hundreds of projects that have benefitted our community over the years. It is governed by a board of directors providing diverse and wide community representation and oversight to ensure sound management and financial integrity. It is clear the reputation of CFGG could be harmed by the very misleading claims in the political ad, and we urge media outlets not to air or promote it.
