Bringing the Arts to Life: The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts was held on April 26, 2017. The ceremony drew a crowd of more than 300 to the site of the future Tanger Center - One Brenner Place at the corner of North Elm & Bellemeade Streets in downtown Greensboro. The program included remarks from Steven Tanger, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan, Greensboro Coliseum managing director Matt Brown, Greater Greensboro Community Foundation president Walker Sanders, fundraising chairperson Kathy Manning and Performing Arts Task Force co-chairman Henry Frye.

It was a celebration years in the making.

In February 2012, The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, Inc. created a socio-economic, demographically diverse Task Force is created to explore the needs for, feasibility of, and economic impact resulting from building a new performing arts center in downtown Greensboro. The task force included members of the Greensboro City Council, business members, volunteers, employees from existing art organizations, and other interested individuals.

Fast forward to the fundraising success reported in December 2013:

“I am very pleased that our community has dug deeply and generously to help us achieve my challenge goal of raising $35 million,” Tanger said. “This is an astonishing accomplishment, for which I congratulate the fundraising volunteers. Their diligent work, and the generosity of all of our donors, is making possible a watershed moment in the history of Greensboro. I am filled with gratitude and excited to see this project break ground in the coming months!”

The success of the private fundraising efforts resulted in the biggest private-public partnership in Greensboro’s history. “It’s awe-inspiring to see the $35 million goal achieved,” Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said. “We’re very appreciative of the residents and business leaders in Greensboro who have invested in this important project for our downtown.”
