Local mother establishes fund to support hungry children

A Greensboro woman has helped launch Greensboro’s first BackPack program, which provides area school-age children who are at risk of hunger with backpacks of nutritious foods to take home on the weekends.

Parker Wood White says the birth of her daughter, Avery, shown left, inspired her mission to assist children and our community.

White is a 1997 graduate of Page High School, who worked in Washington for U.S. senators before returning to her hometown in 2008.

The BackPack program – a new charitable purpose fund at The Community Foundation – is affiliated with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. and Feeding America’s national BackPack Program, as well as Guilford Child Development’s Learning Together Family Literacy Program. The local program launched at Wiley Elementary School and Shiloh Head Start.

White says it costs about $150 to feed each child per year – less than $5 per child each weekend.
