The Gate City Co. was established in 2007 as a subsidiary of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The Gate City board is made up of a broad cross-section of community leaders – from heads of business and financial companies to neighborhood advocates; from for-profit companies to nonprofits to foundations.
In 2006, The Community Foundation conducted an exhaustive study of housing needs throughout Greensboro – everything from homelessness and affordable housing to higher income housing – throughout the city. We found dozens of important housing needs that were going unmet because of the lack of financial or human resources. The Gate City Co. was established to serve as a catalyst, partnering with the city and other for-profit and nonprofit entities, to proactively address these needs.
Gate City works in concert with the City of Greensboro as its purchasing agent for the utilization of neighborhood stabilization funds, specifically for the Glenwood and Ole Asheboro neighborhoods. And because Gate City has an independent board of directors, it can act more entrepreneurially, quickly taking advantage of opportunities as they appear.
Gate City also is devoted to downtown revitalization and providing guidance and assistance on steering the proper development of challenging areas.
