Founded in 1999, the Future Fund nurtures philanthropic leadership through grantmaking and the development of a permanent endowment. More than 200 members share a commitment to Greensboro and an interest in charitable involvement. The Future Fund capitalizes on each member’s creativity and passion to impact the greater Greensboro community positively.
2016 FUTURE FUND GRANTMAKING AREA: Mental Health with a focus on minors and their families.
The stigma and lack of discussion around mental health is often propagated by the lack of investment in this area. According to the Mental Health Association of Greensboro, “mental illness is the second leading cause of disability in the United States, yet only 7% of all healthcare expenditures are designated for mental health disorders.” In addition, there is correlation between individuals that go undiagnosed with those that are of the population in juvenile justice facilities; those dealing with substance abuse; persons experiencing homelessness; and suicide mortality, just to name a few. The National Institute of Mental health reports research showing half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14.
By nature of the endowment, Future Fund’s investment in younger generations is purposed to promote a flourishing people thereby promoting a flourishing community. This is why this year’s grantmaking theme is mental health with a focus on minors and their families.
The Future Fund seeks to invest in proposals that contain approaches or initiatives that:
- provide care and support to mental health patients;
- provide models for the advancement of treatment;
- promote mental health education and access; and/or
- enhance the overall quality of life in the area of health and human services for residents of Greater Greensboro.
Future Fund recommends organizations submit funding requests between $2,500 and $7,500.
Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in or serving the greater Greensboro area. The Future Fund does not award grants for multi-year commitments, individuals, debt retirement, political organizations or campaigns, for-profit entities, programming that promotes religious instruction or doctrine, or endowments.
